Robilant+Voena is pleased to announce the sale of a state portrait by Anton Raphael Mengs (1728 to 1779) to the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. The portrait of Friedrich Christian, Prince of Saxony (1722 to 1763), was commissioned by the young prince in 1751, a few years after Mengs had been appointed principal painter to the Saxon court at Dresden.
It joins three other works by Mengs at the Getty. Davide Gasparotto, senior curator of paintings, said of the acquisition: "With its burst of color and over-the-top grandeur, this painting is a magnificent addition to our extraordinary collection of early modern portraiture."
