Pinacoteca di Brera acquires painting by Giacomo Ceruti

The Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan has acquired A Lady in Costume by Giacomo Ceruti, a mid-eighteenth-century painting of a woman in elegant dress.

The Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan has acquired A Lady in Costume by Giacomo Ceruti, a mid-eighteenth-century painting of a woman in elegant dress, which Mina Gregori described as Venetianising in her 1982 monograph on the artist. The sitter is most likely an invented figure rather than a particular person, although the costume has led to the suggestion that she is dressed as Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots.
