The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston has acquired a picture by Claude Vignon (1593 to 1670) of the biblical hero David. Everything is brought forward to the picture plane, and the subject, the concentrated light and the single figure filling the field are all drawn from Caravaggio. The canvas dates from Vignon's years in Paris, when he won the admiration of Marie de' Medici and her court, and made himself the interpreter of a wealthy and sophisticated taste that was at once loyal to tradition and hungry for the new.
